When Nathan is 17, he angers the king. So he leaves his family vineyard and hikes across the northern border to a foreign city. While in exile, he mentions Milcah. “She lives just over the ridge from us. Her mom and dad have sheep and goats.” And sometimes he thinks of “the girl who lives just over the next ridge.”
After three years, Nathan returns to his native land, but not to his family’s vineyard. Instead, he provokes a violent confrontation with the king and then hides deep in the southern desert. When he finally emerges, good news — the royal search parties have forgotten him. So at 21, Nathan goes back to work in his family vineyard.
Does he still think of Milcah? Is she still there, just over the next ridge? Does he see her? Where? What do they say? What do they do?
